During my summer internship at a securities company, every morning (or before the market open in the afternoon) we had to listen/ watch/ read the news on a particular stock assigned each day. I learned that news was one of the most accessible sources of information. Thus, throughout this project, I will be posting brief summaries of significant events regarding the stock market in that month.
October 2016: Twitter Incorporation (TWTR) stock price dropped significantly in early October. It seemed to be less interests in the company’s takeover than what the investors expected. General Electric Company (GE) –a conglomerate corporation– announced a deal to merge its oil and gas business with Baker Hughes Incorporated (BHI) –an oilfield services company. The two companies have different expertise in the industry, therefore, the deal is believed to help strengthening their business.

October had been unintendedly adventurous.
My initial plan for October was to find a group of investors –members of clubs on campus (FBLA, Entrepreneurship club, for example). Even though, I received some help from people, but I realized that the clubs are not directly relevant to personal finance, stock investment in particular. In fact, there is none. Then, I did some research to find what I can do. And voila! Let’s start a club. Some interests around investing and personal finance have been noticed at school. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of varieties in activities related to these topics. As I mentioned earlier, they are not often taught or introduced at schools. After some research, I came up with an Investment club. The club will engage the members with some hands-on activities: stock market game, watching movies, discussing the news, etc. Consequently, I have been working toward being a probationary club for the past month. There are a few more things that need to be done, and then we will hopefully have our first meeting soon. According to the timeline I posted previously, a couple of things were put off due to the difficulty in finding our investors, however, it will be taken care of soon after our very first club meeting. A special thanks goes to Ms. Arbour, Investment club adviser. |
